Leipzig

With plenty of traffic jams in Bavaria it took almost twice the time to arrive in Leipzig.
Checking out a parking spot with no fees attached was easy with http://m.gratisparken.de/ – really nice service to check out the unknown neighbourhood.

After quite a breakfast we explored the city center with its many old buildings and passages.

The Neues Rathaus is also quite a massive building we went inside, looked around and took the pathway on the first floor over to Stadthaus.

The university to the south was built on the spot of a multi-century old church. That church survived centuries of wars including 2nd World War. It was demolished by the SED regime in 1963 to make place for new buildings.

A must is to eat in Auerbachs Keller which is where Goethe ate and later decided to put a reference in Faust.

Next stop was the Runde Ecke (round corner). It is the former Stasi (secret service of GDR) base in Leipzig and now a museum which shows the life of people under surveillance in German Democratic Republic, the East Germany.

It quite reminded me of 1984 and showed all the crazy efforts including opening mail with steam to read private letters, secret agent equipment like fales beards and a “false belly” cam. All that effort by so many people for such a foul cause made me sad. All that power could have been used for something more lasting…
Nowadays we provide our private information willingly via the internet and mobile phones, so no force or huge secret apparatus is needed anymore.

Recharging batteries

I’m about to leave for a long weekend and am literally recharging my battery – going for a road trip from Munich to Leipzig, Dresden and back.

Looking forward to the attractions those two cities have to offer as it will be my first visit.

Quick fact: distance by car is more than 1000 kilometers!

  • Munich – Leipzig: 430km
  • Leipzig – Dresden: 120km
  • Dresden – Munich: 470km

Latvia and Lithuania

2012-08-24: München – Riga
With Air Baltic we went from Munich to Riga in just two hours.
Not many people on board maybe because it was a early flight on friday. The Riga airport looked quite nice and modern. We went right through to the exit/baggage claim – most passengers stayed at the gates for connecting flights.

Riga – Lithuania
Europcar provided us with a small Toyota Yaris, absolutely enough for a four day trip around the Baltics. We directly went on the road and headed south to the border to Lithuania. Just before passing the border we had a Pizza in a shopping mall which looked a bit creepy – still in transition between socialism and capitalism.
In northern Lithuania we visited the Hill of Crosses, a pilgrimage site.

Curonian Spit
We stayed quite south in Nida (Deutsch: Nidden), just north to the border to Russia. Many tourists were here, including quite some elderly Germans. The city offers a museum for Thomas Mann who lived here 1930-1932.

A slightly different route more to the west led us back to Riga where we stayed for the final night and day in the Baltics.

2012-08-28: Riga – München
It was a great trip and the two countries at the north-east part of Europe have quite something to offer.

Ibiza & La Manga

First step: München to Frankfurt Flughafen
Starting on time to the Hauptbahnhof in München accompanied by rather nice weather I was able to avoid the delayed ICE initially chosen. As train staff explained it hit a tree.
The one before built up a delay, too which jeopardized my switch in Mannheim to another ICE. However, Deutsche Bahn managed to put both trains on tracks right besides each other for quick and easy change.
Now with a delay of 7 minutes but still earlier than planned the Frankfurt Flughafen Fernbahnhof was reached.

Next point was to find the DB Lounge in which I consumed a snack and wrapped up additional gear provided by a non-disclosed local family member.

Baggage drop-off
At Frankfurt Airport the competitor of local matador Lufthansa airline, AirBerlin is situated at Terminal 2.
With our e-tickets we went to the drop-off counter.

Boarding
The delays went on, plane ABF0 was about an hour late and we had our touchdown on Ibiza soil at 20:17. After a short trip with the stuffed airport bus we waited for our luggage.

Casablanca, last day of trip

Casablanca (casa blanca means white house) is start and end of our trip. The quirly city is quite a contrast to the other big cities. Night clubs, the ocean boulevard and the beach with horse riding opportunities as well as countless soccer/football players one one side, the small medina and vast housing areas on the other side.
The grand Hassan II mosque in between those areas reaches out to the atlantic ocean.

And of course the international airport as starting and end point for so many visitors including myself.

A tour through the mosque includes praying room, wash room below and hammam. Watch out for starting times as they shift one hour during DST (instead of 14h its at 15h).

After a walk through the Medina which looked not nearly like the ones in Marrakesh or Fes we went to Rick’s Cafe, a very nice restaurant to have birthday dinner. I really enjoyed the atmosphere.

Au revoir Maroc!

Fes

After early breakfast we were brought by our guide to the entrance gate of the medina. Fes is one of the four royal cities and also the oldest one, it was founded 900 AD.

Medina, University, royal palace, tanery, small stores (carpet, pottery), old jewish quarter, hill with tombs.

evening: dinner in new city

Marrakesh to Fez, Day 2

Day 2

After early breakfast we’re heading out to see Sahara.

valley of gorges was great, between the mountains was a narrow road.

berber villages

irrigation (hatarra) system. many holes in the earth from mountains to oasis. 30m to surface level

erg chebbi

dinner, music

Day 3

In the early morning everybody ram ip the dunes to see sunrise. After a short intermission in sandboarding which looks like snowboarding except on sand we went back to Petite Prince by camels.

Back in base camp we had breakfast and buckeled up. After saying goodby to the other camp tourists we went on with our voyage to Fez.

First stop was a weekly market nearby where donkeys, sheep andanything else is sold.

Short stop at one end of Z valley.

Nice tour through the countryside which went hilly when we entered middle atlas. Bee boxes. Then Midal, a city looking typical european and amzingly with the same climate as northern europe. People grow apples here. Good view to the highest mountain of middle atlas which is covered with snow.

Azru / Cedar forest national park – monkeys and dogs wait for food from visitors.

Ifrane, part of moroccon switzerland.
Holiday houses for the rich and a private university.

Fez. Arrival at Riad Layla in the medina.

Marrakesh to Fez, Day 1

In the morning we had a short breakfast and were accompanied by Saïd to Djemma El-Fna for pickup by Roughtours.
Ismael (guide) and Youssef (driver) welcomed us together with a thai couple.

We passed the high atlas on a road
with uncountable curves. It was built between 1925 – 1939. Col du Tichka.

After descending the area changed to a rocky and dry envirobment, much more desertlike than the fruitful gardens around Marrakesh.

Kasbah means house with bamboo rooftop and four towers for the four wives of the owner. We visited the UNESCO World Heritage site of Ksar Ait Ben Hadou with some kasbahs of the middle age.

Rushing through the town we saw Oscar studios and Tawrita Kasbah from the outside.

Segura Oasis, oasis of palm trees.

Valley of Roses

Staying at Hotel Xaluca Dades for one night.
